Mather Jamie Team Day Out: Exploring the Peaks and Supporting Local Sustainability
12/09/2024
At Mather Jamie, we understand the importance of team bonding and taking time to enjoy the beauty of our natural surroundings. Over the past few years, we've made it a tradition to participate in wellbeing walks at the end of summer, starting with the Leicestershire Round in 2022 and last year’s 15-mile Charnwood Peaks Walk. These events have become a highlight for the team, offering not only physical activity but also the opportunity to appreciate the landscapes we work to preserve.
This year, we took things further by venturing out for a day filled with walking, exploration, and learning in the Peak District. Our focus was on discovering local landscapes and supporting businesses that share our commitment to sustainability and responsible land management.
Here’s a snapshot of our day out:
07:45 – Meeting at Mather Jamie’s Office
Our day began early with a gathering at the Mather Jamie office, where the team arrived excited and ready for an adventurous day. Armed with comfortable walking shoes and a sense of anticipation, we set off promptly for the Peak District.
08:00 – Depart from Mather Jamie’s Office
As we departed from the office, the coach ride was filled with chatter, laughter, and discussions about the day ahead. With scenic views along the way, the journey set the tone for a refreshing day in nature.
09:30 – First Walking Group Drop-off at Calver
The first stop was Calver, where part of our team embarked on a scenic 6-mile walk. Surrounded by the rolling hills and picturesque countryside, it was the perfect opportunity to disconnect from our daily routine and immerse ourselves in the beauty of the Peak District.
10:00 – Remaining Group Drop-off at Chatsworth House
Meanwhile, the rest of the group visited the renowned Chatsworth House to explore its stunning gardens. The beautifully landscaped grounds, bursting with vibrant flowers and intricate sculptures, offered a tranquil setting for a leisurely walk. Chatsworth’s dedication to preserving historical beauty aligns with Mather Jamie's mission of thoughtful land management.
11:45 – Coach to Home Farm, Hassop
After a refreshing morning outdoors, we regrouped and made our way to Home Farm, Hassop. This estate, managed by Mather Jamie, was a highlight of the day as it showcased how modern farming practices can embrace sustainability.
12:00 – Slice of Cake, Beverages, and Farm Talk
At Home Farm, we were treated to delicious slices of cake and hot beverages, a welcome break after the morning’s activities. We learned more about the estate’s tenant farms, who have diversified into organic farming. The talk highlighted the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and the success of their eco-friendly ventures, such as the organic Simply Milk Honesty Farm Shop and eco-logo cabin available for public hire. It was inspiring to see how Mather Jamie’s managed estates are thriving through sustainability and innovation.
13:00 – Walkers and Coach Depart for Thornbridge Brewery
Following our time at Home Farm, we set off again—some of us by foot for a 3-mile walk, and others by coach—towards our final destination, Thornbridge Brewery in Bakewell.
15:30 – Pizza and Beverages at Thornbridge Brewery
Upon arrival at Thornbridge Brewery, the team gathered for a well-deserved treat of pizza and locally brewed beverages. The brewery’s laid-back atmosphere allowed us to unwind, enjoy great food, and share stories from the day. Thornbridge’s emphasis on local production and quality complements our appreciation for community-driven businesses.
17:00 – Depart Thornbridge for Mather Jamie’s Office
As the day came to a close, we boarded the coach and headed back to the office, reflecting on the day’s adventures. The experience left us all with a deeper appreciation for the beautiful landscapes we work to protect and manage every day.
18:30 – Approximate Arrival Back at the Office
We arrived back at Mather Jamie’s office around 6:30 p.m., feeling invigorated from a day spent in nature and amongst colleagues. It was a fantastic opportunity to bond, recharge, and experience firsthand the impact of sustainable land management, something Mather Jamie is deeply committed to.
Our day out was not just a break from routine—it was an affirmation of the values that guide our work. From exploring the landscapes, we help manage to learning about innovative sustainability practices, the experience was a reminder of why we’re passionate about what we do at Mather Jamie.
