Director

Gary Kirk

BSc (Hons) MRICS FAAV

With over 15 years at Mather Jamie, Gary plays a pivotal role across multiple sectors, providing expert advice to a wide variety of landowner clients. His breadth of experience ensures that clients receive well-rounded guidance, often addressing wider property matters beyond their core projects.

Explain a little bit about your role and how it benefits clients.

I have an extremely varied role within the business and I am fortunate enough to touch on almost all sectors at what we do at Mather Jamie, through the variety of clients that I advise.

This breath of experience often proves invaluable when talking to landowner clients who as often as not have different things that they want to ask you in relation to their property matters aside from often what is one core project.

I am also proud to have been at Mather Jamie for over 15 years and this long tenure gives me an excellent understanding of how our business operates and the breath of our client base.

What has been your most memorable career highlight or achievement?

I would like to reflect on my career to date as having had lots of important moments rather than one outstanding in particular achievement. Becoming qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and a member of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers, although a long time ago now, was a huge goal for me in the first few years having graduated from university.

More recently, my promotion to the Directorship of the business in 2022 felt like the culmination of a long journey from starting as a placement student in 2008 and was certainly a hugely significant moment for me.

What’s the best part about your job / working at/ for Mather Jamie

For me it is all about the people, both within the business and within our client and contact base. I enjoy the property side of matters, but it is the interaction with such a varied group of people that I find the most interesting as I believe that the art of being a good agent is as much as understanding people as it is property.

I think if you try and be something that you are not ultimately this will prove unsuccessful, and that people are at their most productive and successful when they are operating in the way that they truly believe is right.

What aspect of planning/property legislation would you change/want to introduce if you were PM?

It is a hot topic of conversation currently however I struggle to understand the logic behind the proposed changes to Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief, as proposed by the current government.

I fear that the impact of these legislative changes will be felt sharpest by those for whom it was not originally intended and ultimately that will lead to a reduction in UK food production, leaving us as a society every increasingly reliant on importing goods which simply cannot make sense both in terms of trading position and our green footprint.

How do you think the UK will meet its climate change targets by 2030?

I fear this question will largely be irrelevant if other larger nations around the world do not see the problem the same as we do. Advancements in technology around recycling and renewable energy production have to be the way to trade out of this issue rather than punitive measures preventing people from using energy which in many cases is simply being ignored.

What is the best lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?

Never judge a book by it is cover and just be yourself.

What is a fun fact about you that others may not know?

Just about everyone I have met knows that I am a passionate Leicester City Football Club supporter and have been so all my life. Picking something that people are perhaps less aware of I would have to say that I am a fan of rock and metal music and annually attend Download Festival at Donington Park.
